Chapter 15

“Hey, look who’s back,” Bob called out in a jovial voice. “What took you so long?”

Quentin turned to see Bob and Tocho over by the DimGate. The door was open, and there was a line of DimGates visible on the other side in the Genesis Dimension. “Close the door,” he said. “Quick. We’ve got trouble.”

Bob shut the door and disabled the DimGate. Tocho walked over to them, shining his flashlight across their backpacks. “What kind of trouble? It looks like you were successful, to me.”

Panting, Quentin dropped to the ground, leaning back against the backpack. Gravity seemed to have doubled its powerful draw in the last few minutes. “We need to consider the Genesis Dimension a compromised location, at least at DimCorp headquarters. We ran into Carl Holt again.”

Bob stepped over beside Tocho, his flashlight shining on the ground in front of them. “Did he recognize you?”

Quentin tried to laugh, but a tired wheeze was the best he could produce. “Yeah, he recognized me. There’s not any doubt about that, trust me.”

“We need to get him up to the cabin,” Eissa said. “I need to see how bad he’s hurt.”

“Hurt?” Tocho exclaimed. “Why didn’t you say so? Come on, let’s get the backpack off of him. I’ll carry it up. Can you walk, or do we need the litter?”

Quentin raised his hands in a weak protest. “It’s not that bad. I’m mostly exhausted. Fighting with micro-movers really sucks the energy out of you.” He let them take the Mobile Gate off and help him to his feet, but protested being helped up the trail. “I can walk to the cabin, I promise.”

Once they arrived at the cabin, Eissa sat him down at the kitchen table. Bob turned all the lights on, and Tocho whistled as he got a good look at Quentin.

“Jeez Louise, what happened? Is that your blood?”

Quentin looked down. His black shirt was a sodden mess, but he really couldn’t tell by looking at it. His light gray jacket, on the other hand, looked like evidence from a murder scene. It was covered in bloody handprints, blood spatters, mud, rips, and roofing tar. He grinned at Tocho. “Some of it’s probably mine, but I think most of it belongs to Carl Holt. We had a bit of an altercation.”

Eissa brought out her medical kit and began peeling his jacket off. “Yeah, you might want to avoid your house in Dimension 444,” she said, handing the jacket to Tocho. “Can you toss that outside? We had to leave Carl Holt in your backyard. Bob, can you get me a bowl of water, please?”

Tocho had started for the door, but he stopped in his tracks and turned around. “Is he dead?”

Quentin and Eissa glanced at each other. “I’m not sure,” Quentin said. “Probably not.”

Bob carefully set a bowl of water and a few towels beside the medical kit and pulled a chair out from the table. “I think we’re going to need to hear this story from the start. There’s a lot of missing pieces.
